About the Department of State Development

Overview

The Department of State Development provides leadership to drive responsible development for Western Australia's future. 

The Department works with industry, communities and government agencies, to:

  • deliver significant State development initiatives
  • facilitate major private sector resource and industrial projects
  • enable the development of strategic industrial land and infrastructure
  • attract investment to Western Australia and assist the development of export markets
  • develop a business and regulatory environment that supports the State’s economic growth  

Roles

The Department of State Development has responsibility for:

  • developing and coordinating significant State projects
  • leading co-ordination of approvals processes for major resources, industrial and infrastructure projects across government
  • negotiating and managing agreements between development proponents and the State Government
  • enabling the development of strategic industrial land and infrastructure to meet industry needs
  • providing strategic policy advice on State development issues
  • promoting and attracting investment in Western Australia
  • advising and assisting Western Australian businesses in global export activities  

The Department reports to the Minister for State Development, the Hon. Colin Barnett MLA, through its Director General Anne Nolan.

Group and Division objectives 

State Initiatives:

Objective: to ensure the successful delivery of key Government industrial and infrastructure initiatives

  • Kimberley LNG Precinct
    Objective: the development of an LNG processing precinct and production support facilities in the Kimberley for Browse Basin Gas.
  • Oakajee port, rail and industrial estate
    Objective: the development of a deep water port, and heavy industrial estate at Oakajee, linked by rail to mineral resources in the Mid West Region.
  • Ord East Kimberley Expansion Project
    Objective: the development of community and economic infrastructure and services to support the expansion of the Ord River irrigation Scheme.

Resources and Industry Development:

Objective: the successful development and expansion of Western Australia’s resources and industrial sectors

  • New Projects
    Objective: assist proponents of resources and industrial projects to identify and obtain relevant statutory approvals processes.
  • Investment Facilitation
    Objective: support the development, operation and expansion of resources, associated infrastructure and industrial projects, many of which operate under statutory agreements between the proponent and the State.
  • Major Projects
    Objective: co-ordinate across government approvals processes and activities in support of major resources and industrial projects.
  • Strategic Industrial Lands
    Objective: enable the availability of appropriately zoned land and infrastructure to support strategic resources and industrial development.
  • Western Australian Global Network
    Objective: promote and attract international investment in strategic resources and industrial projects, and support the growth of Western Australia’s export industries.

Strategic Policy:

Objective: To provide strategic policy advice to the Government on resources, industrial and infrastructure issues, to support responsible economic development.
