Kemerton Industrial Park

MAKING KEMERTON PROJECT READY FOR SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT

Providing access to land for industry not only delivers future jobs and business opportunities, but also ensures regional sustainability. The environment will also benefit from the remediation of degraded land and the creation of new areas of endemic vegetation and wetlands.

Introduction

Planning for the development of the Kemerton Industrial Park (KIP) is a critical part of the State Government’s infrastructure strategy. With the limited buffered land for processing resources in the southern part of the State, the KIP is set to become the State’s next, near-metropolitan project ready estate.

The KIP, located 17 kilometres north east of Bunbury and close to Leschenault Inlet, was established in 1985 specifically for resource processing industry.  The KIP will provide for downstream processing and value-adding to the South West region’s extensive primary resources, especially its substantial mineral resources, for both export and domestic markets.

Situated just 160 kilometres south of Perth and connected by two highways, the KIP is accessible to the metropolitan area and the Kwinana Industrial Area, which already have some industrial synergies with the KIP.  Importantly, the KIP is accessible to the Port of Bunbury by road and the planned rail link.

Final Kemerton Strategy Plan

Following extensive consultation with the community and relevant government agencies, the Kemerton Strategy Plan has now been finalised.

The Plan draws together the findings of previous environmental and infrastructure studies and forms the foundation for upcoming environmental investigations and planning approvals necessary to render the Park project ready.  The final Strategy Plan incorporates changes that reflect the community's concerns with regard to the development of the KIP.

The Department of State Development, in association with LandCorp, are holding community information sessions to present the final Kemerton Industrial Park (KIP) Strategy Plan and the way forward.

Everyone with an interest in the area is welcome to attend, with representatives from DSD and LandCorp will be available to answer your questions.

The Next Steps

Under the Government's Heavy Use Industrial Land Strategy, DSD and Landcorp are now undertaking the environmental and planning studies needed to achieve the approvals to enable further industrial development at Kemerton to take place.

This process involves producing a statutory Structure Plan (based on the Strategy Plan) which will enable the KIP zoning in the Harvey District Planning Scheme to be made consistent with that of the Greater Bunbury Region Scheme.

Comprehensive environmental work is a required input to this planning and rezoning task.  Community comment will be invited at key stages through the process.
