Pilbara 21 Final Strategy Report

In June 1992, the Government endorsed the Pilbara 21 Final Strategy Report. Pilbara 21 treated the Burrup Peninsula as a special case for industrial land planning due to its known conservation, heritage and recreational values and proposed a concept plan for multiple land uses on the Burrup Peninsula.

Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy 1996

As a result of the concept plan incorporated within the Pilbara 21 Final Strategy Report, the Government in 1994 appointed a Burrup Management Advisory Board to oversee the preparation of a detailed land use plan and management strategy for the
Burrup Peninsula. Following extensive public consultation Cabinet endorsed the final Plan and Management Strategy in 1996. The Plan remains in force today.
The Burrup Land Use Plan and Management Strategy (available in the right hand panel), which received State and National awards from the Royal Australian Planning Institute, including a certificate commending the public consultation approach, provided a balance between land uses such as industry, conservation, recreation and aboriginal heritage.

Karratha Area Development Strategy

The essence of the 1996 Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy was incorporated in the then Ministry for Planning's Karratha Area Development Strategy, which brought together the numerous planning activities underway at the time in and around Karratha (including planning for a multi-use marine reserve, a fish habitat protection area, and issues relating to Karratha townsite). The Karratha Area Development Strategy also considered proposed industrial and conservation uses at Cape Lambert and Cape Preston. The Strategy was released as a draft for public comment and published in its final form in 1998 following endorsement by the WA Planning Commission and Cabinet.

Shire of Roebourne Town Planning Scheme No 8

Although a non-statutory planning document, the Karratha Area Development Strategy provided guidance for aspects of the Shire of Roebourne's Town Planning Scheme No 8, which was gazetted in August 2000. Planning schemes are subject to public scrutiny and input during their development. The Shire of Roebourne's Town Planning Scheme No 8 reflected the industrial land planning philosophy for the Burrup Peninsula.
